Bubba Sawyer, famously known as Leatherface, is the main antagonist in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its sequels, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He wears masks made of human skin and engages in murder and cannibalism alongside his inbred family.
Biography[]
The original film never showed Leatherface without one of his human-hide faces on. Leatherface used to work as a butcher at the meat factory.
Gunnar Hansen, who portrayed Leatherface in the original 1974 film, sees Leatherface as "completely under the control of his family. He'll do whatever they tell him to do. He's a little bit afraid of them." Tobe Hooper portrays Leatherface as a "big baby" who kills in self-defense because he feels threatened. In the first film, Leatherface shows fear when new people enter his home.
Leatherface's family uses the bones of the people he kills to build the inside of their house. They process the victims' flesh into barbecue and chili, which Drayton Sawyer, a skilled chef, sells at his gas station. In the sequel, they enter human-flesh dishes at cook-offs.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre[]
When Kirk enters through the unlocked door of the Sawyer house, Leatherface suddenly appears and kills Kirk with a hammer. Pam enters soon after, and trips into a room filled with furniture made from human bones. She attempts to flee, but Leatherface catches her, and impales her on a meathook, making her watch as he butchers Kirk with a chainsaw. Jerry heads out to look for Pam and Kirk at sunset. He sees the house and finds Pam, still alive, inside a freezer. Before he can react, Leatherface kills him.
With darkness falling, Sally and Franklin set out to find their friends. As they near the neighboring house and call out, Leatherface lunges from the darkness and kills Franklin with a chainsaw. Sally runs toward the house, and finds the desiccated remains of the family's grandmother upstairs. She escapes from Leatherface by jumping through a second-floor window, and flees to the gas station.
The man at the gas station brings Sally home while Leatherface, now dressed as a woman, serves dinner. Leatherface and the hitchhiker bring down their Grandpa. He is revealed to be alive when he sucks blood from a cut on Sally's finger. They decide that Grandpa, the best killer in the old slaughterhouse, should kill Sally. He tries to hit her with a hammer, but he is too weak. In the ensuing struggle, she breaks free, leaps through a window, and flees to the road. Leatherface and the hitchhiker give chase, but the hitchhiker is run over and killed by a passing truck. Leatherface attacks the truck with his chainsaw, and when the driver stops to help; the driver knocks down Leatherface with a pipe wrench, causing the chainsaw to cut his leg. The driver flees, and Sally escapes in the back of a passing pickup truck as Leatherface maniacally flails his chainsaw in the air.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2[]
While two high school seniors race along the Texas highway, they are attacked by Leatherface, who emerges from the back of a truck that is driving right next to them. Leatherface rips up the roof using his chainsaw. After a short struggle, one of them tries shooting Leatherface with his revolver but Leatherface fatally slices off part of the driving senior's head, and the car ends up crashing and killing the passenger.
Leatherface and his brother Chop Top arrive at a radio station, looking to kill the DJ, who is known as Stretch, because she knows the truth about them. Stretch is confronted by Chop Top before being attacked by Leatherface. Stretch's work buddy, L.G., arrives at the station and is attacked by Chop Top. Leatherface corners Stretch and is about to kill her, but she seduces him into sparing her. Leatherface returns to Chop Top and leads him to believe that he has killed Stretch. They then drive to their home, an abandoned carnival ground decorated with human bones, multi-colored lights, and carnival remnants. Stretch follows them to see where they live and is greeted by Lefty, a cop who is the uncle of Sally and Franklin, the victims of the first film. Stretch falls underground into the slaughterhouse.
Stretch is found by Leatherface, who puts L.G.'s skinned face and hat on her before tying her arms and leaving. Drayton Sawyer finds Stretch roaming the grounds of their cave and the family captures her. Chop Top scolds Leatherface when he finds out that Stretch is still alive. Lefty eventually finds her being tortured at the dinner table by Chop Top, Drayton, Leatherface, and Grandpa Sawyer and saves her. Equipped with chainsaws, Lefty and Leatherface fight while Stretch escapes the underground house with Chop Top chasing after her. Drayton recovers a grenade from the hitchhiker's body and sets it off which kills him, Lefty, Grandpa Sawyer and injurs Leatherface.
Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre lll[]
Leatherface had a daughter in this film.
In the beginning Leatherface bludgeons a young woman to death with a sledgehammer and cuts off her face to make it into a mask while her sister Sara watches from a nearby window.
Sometime later, a couple traveling through Texas, Michelle and Ryan, are ambushed by Leatherface but they manage to drive off unscathed.
Afterwards, Michelle, Ryan, and another driver, a survivalist named Benny, crash when a bloodied man named Tex leaps in front of the car. Benny flees and encounters Leatherface, but is saved by Sara, who had earlier escaped Leatherface. Benny learns that Sara's entire family was killed, and that Leatherface and his family are watching the roads. Benny hears Michelle and Ryan calling for him and leaves Sara; Leatherface kills her with his chainsaw a short time later. Leatherface then attacks Michelle and Ryan, capturing the latter when he gets caught in a bear trap.
When Leatherface returns home, Tex equips him a large golden chainsaw with the words "The saw is family" engraved on it. Leatherface prepares to kill Michelle, but Benny opens fire on the house with an automatic rifle. In the process, Anne is killed, Tinker and Tex are injured, and Michelle escapes.
Michelle flees to the woods, pursued by Leatherface, while Benny fights and eventually burns Tex alive. Benny rushes to Michelle's aid, but is apparently killed by Leatherface. As dawn breaks, Michelle reaches the main road and rests on an abandoned tire, before Alfredo's pickup truck, driven by a surviving Benny, stops in front of her. As Benny helps her into the truck, Alfredo appears and attacks him from behind with a sledgehammer. Benny avoids Alfredo's attacks, and Michelle shoots Alfredo in the chest with a shotgun before the pair drive away, unaware that Leatherface is revving his chainsaw some distance away.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation[]
Leatherface, like the original, is seen wearing an elderly lady’s face and wig. However, for the rest of the film he wears a black dress, a more feminine skin on his body, and a black wig. When we first see him, he wears a camouflage jacket, his traditional white apron, and has a long black curly wig.
Leatherface screams throughout the film. When he realizes that he’s been caught by Heather, he screams, along with Heather. When Heather temporary escapes from his hands into a storage room, he screams. After he throws her into a box and she keeps opening it, he continues to scream. It’s not until after he uses heavy objects to prevent her from escaping from the box that Leatherface has a total meltdown. He also screams after killing Barry. When he does so, it worries his brother W.E., who's outside and can only hear Leatherface screaming.
Leatherface appears to be the weakest in this generation of the family and is hurt by the fighting that occurs. His brother W.E. abuses him relentlessly, to which Leatherface does not fight back but cries. During a fight between Vilmer, Darla, and W.E., Leatherface is seen cowering behind the refrigerator screaming, crying and plugging his ears.
During dinner, while dressed in a drag, Leatherface is seen doing his nails. At one point, Vilmer mentions how his brother (Leatherface) is tired of his current female face and wants a new one. He implies that Jenny’s face will be his new face, which Leatherface appears excited over.
When Jenny escapes again after using Vilmer’s remote controls to mess with his bionic leg, Leatherface, in his full drag, chases Jenny with the chainsaw. During the chase, one of Rothman’s men, flying an airplane, runs Vilmer over with the wheel. Leatherface appears to be devastated over it. When Jenny escapes in Rothman’s limo, Leatherface has a meltdown. He screams and emulates the infamous chainsaw dance seen in the original.
